In three-point lighting, what is the role of the back light?

Back light separates the subject from the background and adds depth.

Back lighting creates a rim around the subject, which helps separate them from the background and adds depth to the image. By positioning the light behind and slightly to the side, you get a subtle edge along the subject’s outline, especially on the hair and shoulders, so they don’t look like they’re floating against a flat backdrop. This edge light is what gives the scene its three-dimensional feel.

This differs from the main light, which is the strongest source that shapes the face; and from the fill light, which sits opposite the main light to soften shadows rather than define edges. It also isn’t used to illuminate the background itself, but to enhance the subject’s separation from it.

Back light provides the main illumination.

Back light fills the shadows on the subject's face.

Back light is used to illuminate the background only.
